PMD installed earthquake monitoring instrument at various cities

 

زلزلے  کی مانیٹرنگ کے آلات چترال میں بھی نصب کئے جائیں گے۔


ISLAMABAD (APP) - Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed third generation earthquake monitoring instruments in the various cities.

Official sources said that the monitoring instruments were installed at Quetta, Khuzdar, Zhob, Turbat, Karachi, Chitral, Cherat, Katas, Muzaffarabad, Balakot, Lahore, Fort Manro, Islamabad, Tarbela, Gilgit, Skardu, Patan, Umarkot and Nagarparker. Besides that, the official told APP that the PMD has also completed seismic hazard study for the whole country with the help of Norwegian experts in 2007 and the study was also disseminated to all the relevant stakeholders. This study, he informed, is useful for the development of engineering structures. He also mentioned that NESPAK and other stake-holders have also revised “Building Code of Pakistan” after the devastating Kashmir earthquake of 2005.

He said that occurrence of earthquake cannot be forecasted but can be monitored regularly. Accurate monitoring of underground activities helps in taking preventive measures by the concerned organisations like development authorities, municipalities and disaster management agencies etc. 

The official said that main cities of Pakistan located on the fault lines included Azad Jammu Kashmir, Muzaffarabad and Bagh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balakot, Chitral, Balochistan, Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, Bostan and Muslim Bagh and all these areas are monitored regularly.
